'They played with gusto'
Wisden CricInfo staff - July 12, 2002

With the Indian Cricketer of the Century Awards coming up on July 23, Wisden Online have been asking players for their opinions and memories about Indian cricketers and today it's the turn of an English pair, the former Test players Dennis Amiss and Derek Pringle, to have their say. Amiss remembered the Indian spinners most vividly: Chandra with the lethal bouncing googly, and most surprisingly for a spinner, a bouncer; Bishan Bedi with the beautiful action and amazing accuracy; Venkat's flat and quick arm-ball and Prasanna's great flight - "they were class spinners". Amiss travelled to India in 1972-73 and 1976-77 … and said they were "marvellous tours to go on".

Derek Pringle played against India in 1982 and 1986 and although he only played a single one-day international against Sachin Tendulkar, unsurprisingly, he rates him as the top Indian batsman he's seen. "His great record must put him at the forefront of the contenders". Pringle then compared Tendulkar with Sunil Gavaskar: "Gavaskar was a great player but I don't think he quite had the strokeplay of Sachin".

On Kapil Dev, Pringle made another comparison, this time with Ian Botham in that they were both fine allrounders and both played with gusto. With the spinners, slow left-armer Maninder Singh gets a mention but Pringle admits "you could choose a number of their bowlers over the years".
