| Hampshire Cricket today announced that their captain Robin Smith is to receive a Testimonial in 2003.
Robin Smith joined Hampshire as a young enthusiastic teenager in 1981, and immediately created an impression that has followed him in his 23 years with the club. Capped in 1985, Robin has been captain since 1998.
Speaking from his home where he is recovering from Chicken Pox, this popular player told me he was delighted and honoured to have been awarded this opportunity, and being just the second player in Hampshire Cricket to have been awarded a Benefit and a Testimonial, after Peter Sainsbury is especially pleasing.
Smith who had a benefit in 1996 recently passed the milestone of scoring 25,000 first-class runs, and is just three runs short of achieving 40,000 runs in all forms of senior cricket.
