Captain Smith returns under the lights at the Rose Bowl
Richard Isaacs - 22 July 2002
Hampshire captain Robin Smith is expected to make his first Norwich Union League appearance of the season, when the lights go on for the floodlit match against Lancashire Lightning at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday evening (4.10pm start).
Smith, who has been troubled by a niggling back injury, which is sound enough to play in the Championship but not thus far in the shorter version of the game, comes in for England-bound John Crawley.
Director of Cricket Tim Tremlett announces a squad of 13 that he hopes will halt the run of two consecutive NUL losses.
Derek Kenway and Giles White return to the squad having missed the India game, while Chris Tremlett, Alan Mullally and wicket-keeper Nic Pothas are recalled after their rest.
Lancashire, who have a long, late journey down to the South Coast from their Championship match concluding today (Monday) at Headingley, will be without England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff who will join Crawley at Lord's ahead of the first Test.
The gates will open at 1.10pm, three hours before the start and spectators are urged to arrive in plenty of time to alleviate any potential travel problems.
Tickets are still available from the Membership Office until 5pm on Monday evening and from 9am until the gates open at 1.10pm on the day of the game. It is envisaged tickets will remain available on the gate before the start, but to avoid disappointment, an early purchase is advised.
Squad: Neil Johnson, Derek Kenway, Robin Smith (capt), Giles White, Will Kendall, John Francis, Lawrence Prittipaul, Nic Pothas (w-k), Dimitri Mascarenhas, Shaun Udal, Chris Tremlett, Alan Mullally, James Tomlinson.
