Sri Lankan expats organise indoor charity match in Sydney Ragavan Thurasingam - 19 July 2002
Sri Lankan expatriates in Sydney, Australia have organised an expatriate indoor series against Indian expatriates, called the International Charity Challenge, to raise funds for charity. Both sides are preparing for an entertaining and bruising encounter on Sunday the 21st of July at Five Dock Indoor Centre at 6.30pm, in Sydney Australia. Last year Five Dock Cricket Club toured Sri Lanka, with many ex-Sri Lankans on that team, and many on that team are involved on both sides for this match. Like in Sri Lanka, AS Travel has helped with sponsorship for the day and the teams. This game promises everything. Many talented young players who have played grade cricket at a high level or are involved with club or junior cricket and play indoor cricket are looking to entertain the locals and show some sparkling sub-continental style, all for a good cause! Indoor Cricket is slightly different to the outdoor game, with teams of eight players. Scoring is based on where you hit the ball within the court, the size of which is similar to a basketball court. You bat in pairs for a certain period and unlike outdoor if you are out, you bat on till the end of your pairing. Both sides looking to show off the skills of the game and looking to give something back to their respective communities. A raffle draw is being held, along with some lively in-house competitions including a fastest bowler and an all-star sixes competition. The Sounds of Sydney's Great DJ VILAS will ring around Five Dock Indoor Centre, to keep a lively and homely setting, by playing a variety of music to keep the fans happy, creating a real derby feeling, and bringing great atmosphere to the game. ALL PROCEEDS GO TO CHARITY - Orphans of Lanka & AID. Please do come and support.
