India's total, which proved well out of Australia's range on a pitch that lost pace and bounce, was based on Tendulkar's 28th century in one-day internationals. It made him the first batsman to pass 10,000 runs at this level, in his 266th game. Curbing his excesses for a change, Tendulkar took 66 balls over his first 50, then blazed through to his hundred from another 28. His 139 in 125 balls, including 19 fours, spanned all but 28 balls of India's allotment. Laxman, who helped add 199 in 30 overs, was the only other batsman with the scope to build an innings. Although Australia started their reply at the required momentum, there was little substance to their batting apart from a belligerent 70-ball 63 from Gilchrist. In one over from Zaheer Khan, he plundered 22 runs, with five boundary hits.
