Though England's opening batsmen grabbed the headlines, the bowlers had already tilted the match firmly their way. Mullally, in particular, bowled a miserly line and length, and his three top-order wickets crushed West Indies' spirit; even Lara was sluggish, making 54 from 101 balls and hitting just three fours. England fielded out of their skins, conceded only 65 in the last 17 overs and restricted West Indies to an inadequate 169. When England batted, Trescothick's dream start to his international career showed no sign of abating. More than Stewart even, he dominated an increasingly demoralised attack. His strokeplay was uncomplicated and effective, and together they made serene progress to their modest target. In 313 previous one-day internationals England had never won by ten wickets. Nor had West Indies, in 403 games, lost so heavily.
