Pakistan triumphed on a turning pitch – amazingly for a one-day match, no wickets fell to seam bowlers. Shahid Afridi's skidding quicker delivery caused serious problems and he collected five wickets, the best return for Pakistan against England, although it later emerged that he was reported to the ICC by referee Barry Jarman for a suspect action. England, after reaching 171 for three in the 39th over, subsided alarmingly, their plan against the spinning ball amounting to little more than repeated sweep shots. Pakistan eased towards their target – Afridi contributing 61 in 69 balls – as swarms of flies, attracted by the humidity and floodlights, descended on the ground. England's fielders complained of midges in their mouths, eyes and noses; bowlers wore sunglasses and White even bowled in a cap. Afterwards, Pakistan captain Moin Khan said England's weakness had been exposed and that spin would be his trump card for the remainder of the tour.
