U-19 World Cup: Pakistan beat India but still crash out
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 31, 2002

Pakistan 184 for 8 (S Butt 85, R Sharma 3-37) beat India 181 (D Chougule 47, J Zia 3-30) by two wickets It was a day of conflicting emotions for Pakistan. They had the satisfaction of beating arch-rivals India, but were still knocked out of the competition because of West Indies's win over Sri Lanka. Although they won, Pakistan did not secure the vital bonus point, so West Indies go through thanks to their victory when these two sides met earlier this week. Junaid Zia's quick bowling restricted India to 181 all out, despite a rearguard 47 from Deepak Chougule. Pakistan stumbled to 10 for 2 but were rescued by their captain, Salman Butt, who struck an unbeaten 85.

"We are very disappointed to be out of the cup but we knew it would be close and our performance against the West Indies cost us," Butt said. "The important thing is that we have made some new friends today. This is only a game and we wanted to make sure it was played in the right spirit. They are going to go into their senior side and so are we, which is why we wanted to make friends and not enemies." Both sets of players embraced after the game. India must now wait to find out who of England, South Africa, or New Zealand they play in the semi-final.

West Indies 202 (D Pagon 92, N Deonarine 65, H Niroshan 3-36) beat Sri Lanka 140 (N Deonarine 2-20) by 62 runs

West Indies strolled to a composed victory over Sri Lanka to book their place in the semi-finals. Donovan Pagon, the tournament's leading runscorer, hit 92 and was well supported by his captain, Narsingh Deonarine, with 65. Sri Lanka were unable to deal with the West Indies' bowling and Jeevan Mendis's 30 was their top score. Deonarine followed up his good work with the bat by taking 2 for 20 off his 10 overs. West Indies now face Australia in the semi-final.

In the plate competition Kenya notched up their first win of the tournament by beating Papua New Guinea by 25 runs. Maurice Ouma's unbeaten 150 was the cornerstone of Kenya's 236. Zimbabwe overwhelmed Bangladesh by nine wickets to make it three wins out of three in the plate competition. Tatenda Taibu took 3 for 8 as Bangladesh were bowled out for just 91.
