When England swept to the final Wisden CricInfo staff - January 29, 2002
In the fifth of six instalments running throughout the India-England series, we delve into the Wisden Almanack archive to pick out a memorable one-day match between the sides. Here we remember the day that Graham Gooch swept England through to the 1987 World Cup final with a clinical performance against the Indian spinners
Match 1: When Botham met Tendulkar
World Cup 1987 The fourth World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Pakistan in a six-week, 21-venue extravaganza had reached the semi-final stage, and the prospect of an all-subcontinent final was still very much on the cards. Eight teams had taken part, in two pools of four, but by now Australia had been drawn against Pakistan at Lahore, while England were pitted against the holders India at the Wankhede Stadium, Bombay. But the script didn't quite go as planned for the legions of fans in both of the host countries. Pakistan failed to make it past the semi-finals for the third tournament in succession, and the following day India fell to a brilliantly preconceived plan from Graham Gooch. Gooch had spent the entire build-up to the match on one knee in the nets, and on the day Maninder Singh and Ravi Shastri were swept along at five runs per over. Eddie Hemmings delivered the coup de grace with a career-best 4 for 52, and England triumphed by 35 runs in what proved to be Sunil Gavaskar's final international appearance.
