Key win
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 29, 2002
Australia achieved their first victory over New Zealand this season at the seventh attempt - 82 days after the first day of the first Test at Brisbane. The three Tests between the sides were all drawn, and New Zealand won the first three meetings in the VB series. Australia also ended a run of four consecutive one-day defeats to New Zealand: three this year, and one at Auckland in 1999-2000.
Michael Bevan's century was his sixth in 170 one-day internationals. Peculiarly, none of those hundreds have exceeded 108. Less peculiarly, this was the third of the six in which he was unbeaten. In all Bevan has been not out in 52 of his 150 ODI innings, and this was the 20th occasion on which he had been at the crease when Australia completed a successful run-chase.
Shane Bond took 4 for 38, taking his tally to 20 in seven matches at an average of 14.60. His strike-rate is a wicket every 19.9 balls - virtually one every three overs.
Bond has taken those 20 wickets in this series, and needs nine more (from a maximum of four matches: one group match and three possible finals) to equal Glenn McGrath's record for an Australian triangular one-day series. McGrath took 29 in 1998-99; the record for an overseas bowler is 24, by West Indies Joel Garner in 1981-82.
