U-19 World Cup: NZ win last-ball thriller Wisden CricInfo staff - January 28, 2002
Matches played January 28 Group Two: New Zealand 205 all out (49.4 overs, Broom 54, Hogg 3-41) beat England 202 for 8 (50 overs, Bates 3-44) by four runs New Zealand held their nerve to edge out England in match which went down to the final ball. England needed four off the last delivery to win but Peter Borren bowled a dot ball to Chris Gilbert. England started well, reducing New Zealand to 28 for 3 before a spirited 54, containing 10 fours, from opener Jessie Ryder led the recovery. After he was dismissed by a brilliant catch from wicketkeeper Stephen Pope, the innings drifted before Brook Hatwell (45) and Ian Sandbrook (24) added crucial runs in the final overs. England's reply started disastrously, Kadeer Ali and captain Nicky Peng being dismissed in the first two overs. A mature 47 from 17-year-old Samit Patel helped England back into the game, and then a seventh-wicket stand of 61 between Mark Pettini (36) and Pope took England to within 10 runs of victory with eight balls remaining. But both fell within five balls of each other and the last pair were unable to scramble the necessary runs. "I felt it was slipping away from us and they should really have won the game" said New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch. England coach Paul Farbrace said that despite the defeat the team's performance had been pleasing, and he remained confident that England were capable of beating tournament favourites Australia on Wednesday. "Nobody is expecting us to beat Australia," he said, "but if we play like we did in this match then we are capable of causing a surprise." Group One: Australia 237 for 5 (45.4 overs, Bailey 54, Simmonds 52) beat South Africa 236 for 8 (50 overs) by five wickets Australia made light of a challenging target of 237, easing to victory with more than four overs to spare and confirming their reputation as the team to beat. South Africa recovered from 130 for 5, largely thanks to Ryan Bailey (48) and Ryan McLaren (39*) who added 55 off 53 balls for the sixth wicket. Australia were content to work the ball around the large outfield, happy to take twos and threes rather than go for boundaries. Man of the Match George Bailey scored 54 not out off 52 balls and Craig Simmons 52 off 76 balls in a perfectly paced chase. Australia's coach Wayne Phillips was delighted with the performance. "These are capable, committed young men and their cricket reflected that." In the plate competition, Nepal crushed Canada by ten wickets with more than 27 overs to spare after Canada were bowled out for 102. Sanjam Regmi (3 for 10) and Binod Das (3-13) were the pick of the bowlers. In the other match Namibia beat Scotland by four wickets, thanks to a powerful 142 from Stephan Swanepoel off just 152 balls and included 16 fours and two sixes. It overshadowed an elegant innings by Scotland's Steven Gilmour (100) earlier in the day.
