More arrests mar series Wisden CricInfo staff - January 28, 2002
Two people were injured and 142 evicted from the ground after more crowd trouble during Saturday's VB Series match between Australia and New Zealand at Adelaide. A police spokesman said that the unruly behaviour was started when they ordered the closure of a bar in the Scoreboard Hill area of the ground after the atmosphere became hostile, a result of excessive drinking. A policeman was hurt while trying to make an arrest and a policewoman was hit on the back of the head by a bottle. Four people were arrested. The match between New Zealand and South Africa on Sunday, where there was a far smaller crowd, passed without incident. The latest disturbances come a fortnight after crowd problems marred the opening two games of the VB Series at Melbourne. Over 400 people were evicted from the MCG, and the first game, between Australia and New Zealand, was delayed after spectators hurled debris onto the outfield. The Australian Cricket Board will be hoping that Tuesday's match between Australia and New Zealand, which is again to be held at the MCG, will pass off without incident. Given that Australia might be eliminated from the competition if they lose, that might turn out to be rather an optimistic wish. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
