Ganguly fit and focused Wisden CricInfo staff - January 27, 2002
India's captain Sourav Ganguly has recovered from his hamstring injury and is confident ahead of the fourth one-day international against England at Kanpur on Monday. Ganguly, whose prolific one-day scoring compensates for a run of just three half-centuries in 27 Test matches, denied that he will feel under any pressure to perform. "I am fit and ready to play and get runs," he said. "I got 42 runs, took a wicket and a catch in the first match and I have not failed in a one-day series for five years. There is no pressure on me and I go into every match with a positive frame of mind." Victories at Calcutta and Chennai mean that India need just two more wins to secure the series, and Ganguly declared that he was satisfied with the team's performance, despite the decision to drop the out-of-form VVS Laxman. "It is sad that Laxman has been left out," Ganguly said. "But he is a class player and will be back soon. It is a question of time." Laxman's replacement is 21-year old Mohammad Kaif, who has scored 141 in four Tests, but has yet to play in a one-day international. England meanwhile, were not committing themselves to a changed side, despite an admission from coach Duncan Fletcher that inexperience had cost England so far in the series. Neither Graham Thorpe, who might replace Nick Knight, nor Andrew Caddick can be sure of a game at Kanpur. "I think it is not right to make judgements after only three matches," said Fletcher, "Thorpe has to earn his place. And (Matthew) Hoggard has bowled more than Caddick and is in touch, so he will be favoured."
