U-19 World Cup: Australia cruise home
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 25, 2002

Matches played January 25 Dunedin (Carisbrook): Australia 335 for 5 in 50 overs (CL White 156*, DT Christian 93, Qasim Singh 3-63) beat Scotland 106 in 34.2 overs (XJ Doherty 4-15, B Casson 3-18) by 229 runs. Aust 5 pts, Scotland 0.

Australia thumped Scotland in another mismatch to qualify from Group D with maximum points. Spinners Ben Casson and Xavier Doherty bamboozled the Scots, who were bowled out in the 35th over. No Scottish batsman made more than 24, and Australia's 335 was never even in sight. This came after another fusillade of awesome hitting from the Australian batsmen. Cameron White's unbeaten 156 came from only 121 balls, with four sixes and 10 fours. He and Daniel Christian put on 212 in a fourth-wicket stand that started briskly and got quicker - the Aussies rampaged from 250 to 300 in only 25 balls. Australia meet England, New Zealand, and South Africa in the Super League phase.

Christchurch (Hagley Park No. 2): Nepal 177 in 48.3 overs (V Subedi 34, B Das 31, C Amini 3-31) beat Papua New Guinea 112 in 43.5 overs (M Dai 32, L Lama 4-14) by 65 runs. Nepal 5pts, PNG 0

Nepal came agonisingly close to qualifying for the Super League with a comprehensive victory over Papua New Guinea. Nepal finished with eight points, but failed to progress because Pakistan and England managed more bonus points. Papua New Guinea had no answer to the Nepalese spinners, with Sakthi Gauchan and Lakpa Lama taking combined figures of 20-6-26-5. Nepal had earlier batted disappointingly against much-improved PNG bowling. Five batsmen reached 20, but none could progress beyond 34. After troubling England and beating Pakistan, Nepal will leave the World Cup with their previously non-existent reputation much enhanced.

Lincoln No. 3: England 182 in 48.1 overs (N Peng 59, K Hogg 40, Irfan-ud-din 4-42) lost to Pakistan 183 for 4 in 44.4 overs (Salman Butt 35, Khaqan Arsal 62, T Bressnan 3-46) by 6 wickets. Pak 4 pts, Eng 0

Pakistan completed a sedate victory over England to secure a Super League place. England were let down by an inadequate batting display which was fatally exposed by the spin of Irfan-ud-din and Mohammad Fayyaz. Only Nicky Peng and Kyle Hogg made significant contributions against an accurate attack. Peng struck seven fours, but was bowled by Irfan-ud-din as he tried to accelerate. Irfan went on to befuddle the lower order, and England were dismissed with 11 balls unbowled. Requiring a victory to qualify, Pakistan were initially cautious - Salman Butt's stodgy innings used up 93 balls. But Khaqan Arsal livened things up, striking six fours and a six in his matchwinning innings. Spinners Tim Bressnan and Paul McMahon (10-1-28-1) bowled impressively, but Pakistan barely broke sweat in trotting to victory. England and Pakistan both progress to the next round although neither side has entirely convinced.

Auckland (North Harbour): Canada 41 in 28.4 overs (R McLaren 4-9) lost to South Africa 42 for 0 in 8.2 overs by 10 wickets. SA 5 pts, Canada 0

South Africa beat Canada with embarrassing ease in a match lasting only 37 overs in all. With 21 of their runs coming from extras, Canada's batsmen mustered only 20 runs between them. Top-scorer was No. 11 Chris Argunen, whose triumphant 5 included Canada's only boundary. Canadian captain Nathan Richards produced a spectacular bout of blocking, scoring 1 (retired hurt) from a staggering 40 balls. The South African bowlers lined up gleefully to improve their bowling averages. Stephen Cook (16*) then struck only the second four of the game as South Africa effortlessly eased into the next round.

The groups for the Super League stage are as follows:

Super League 1
India
Sri Lanka
Pakistan
West Indies

Super League 2
South Africa
New Zealand
England
Australia
