Afridi fireworks leave Banglas bewildered
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 25, 2002

Close Pakistan 221 for 2 (35.3 overs, Afridi 83, Younis Khan 66*) beat Bangladesh 220 all out (Razzaq 6-35) by eight wickets
scorecard

Pakistan cantered to an eight-wicket win in the third and final one-day international at Dhaka, completing a series whitewash in the process. Bangladesh, outclassed in both Tests and all three ODIs, could gather few crumbs of comfort from a humiliating non-contest which has done them few favours either on or off the pitch.

Pakistan were in no mood to be charitable after Thursday's crowd trouble, which left Shoaib Akhtar in hospital, and they mercilessly put Bangladesh to the sword. First Abdur Razzaq blew away the Bangladesh tail, finishing with a career-best 6 for 35, and then Shahid Afridi smashed 83 off just 44 balls to leave the bowlers wilting.

The day had started promisingly, if slowly, for Bangladesh when openers Javed Omar (35) and Mehrab Hossain posted 88 for the first wicket before Hossain edged Afridi to Rashid Latif, the wicketkeeper, for 41. When two more quick wickets went down to leave Bangladesh 99 for 3, a collapse was expected.

But Tushar Imran (43) and Aminul Islam (31) arrested the slide in a breezy fourth-wicket partnership of 77, raising hopes of a total approaching 250. Then Razzaq took over. He didn't take a wicket in his first six overs, but grabbed six in 23 balls after that as Bangladesh slumped from 194 for 4 to 220 all out.

Any hopes the Bangladeshis might have had of an upset disappeared with Afridi's onslaught. Every bowler was treated with equal contempt, Enamul Haque faring the worst as his first over cost 28 runs. By the time Afridi's innings, which contained five fours and seven sixes, was ended in the 11th over by Khaled Mahmud's sharp caught-and-bowled, the opening stand was worth 97, of which Naveed Latif had contributed 10.

The wicket brought some respite, but did not threaten to change the course of the match. Latif eventually fell for a dour 36 (176 for 2), but Younis Khan (66*) and Razzaq (26*) continued to go for their shots. Pakistan crossed the finishing line with almost 15 overs to spare.

For the Bangladeshis it was an all-too-familiar story - moments of promise interspersed with mediocrity and naivety. The gulf between them and the other Test-playing countries appears to be as wide as ever. Teams
