Ganguly injury blow Wisden CricInfo staff - January 24, 2002
Sourav Ganguly was forced to miss the third one-day international at Chennai after sustaining a hamstring injury during practice on Thursday. "We were just doing the normal fielding drills that we do every day," explained India's coach, John Wright. "He went for a ball and something happened and he took no further part in practice after that." Ganguly immediately went for a scan after sustaining the injury. A further ultrasound reading on Friday revealed that Ganguly had pulled his hamstring rather than torn it. Anil Kumble took over as captain, and Virender Sehwag was sent up the order to open with Sachin Tendulkar with Sanjay Bangar brought in to strengthen the middle order. There were suggestions that Tendulkar might be asked to lead the side, but they were gently dismissed by Wright. "I think Sachin's at a stage where he is comfortable in the situation he is in," he said. "He plays a very senior role in the team and I think he's happy with that right now."
