U-19 World Cup: India out for 77
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 24, 2002

Matches played January 24
Dunedin (Carisbrook): Kenya 114 in 49.3 overs (R Matthews 4 for 17) lost to West Indies 115 for 1 in 21 overs (Donovan Pagon 63*) by nine wickets. West Indies 5 points, Kenya 0 points.

West Indies, who along with Australia had already secured Super League qualification, totally overwhelmed Kenya in their final group match. Ron Matthews was the main destroyer, taking 4 for 17 with his legspin. Kenya's bowlers could not contain the West Indian openers and Donovan Pagon smashed a classy 67-ball 63, including two sixes and seven fours.

Christchurch (Hagley Oval): Sri Lanka 206 for 9 in 50 overs (S Perera 57, J Mendis 57) beat Zimbabwe 143 in 44.2 overs (Mendis 7 for 19) by 63 runs. Sri Lanka 5 points, Zimbabwe 0 points.

Sri Lanka qualified for the Super League after a superb allround performance by Jeevan Mendis. He joint top-scored with 57 and then took seven Zimbabwe wickets with his legspin. Sharing the limelight was wicketkeeper Charith Sylvester who claimed eight dismissals, including four stumpings – all off Mendis – as well as weighing in with a run-a-ball 36 down the order. Zimbabwe's lack of technique was severely exposed, despite a solid 36 from opener Charles Coventry.

Auckland (North Harbour Stadium): India 77 in 32.4 overs (Ashiqur Rahman 3-17) lost to Bangladesh 78 for 8 in 32.2 overs by two wickets. Bangladesh 5 points, India 0 points.

Bangladesh scored a shock victory over holders India, after dismissing them for just 77 in 32.4 overs. Ashiqur Rahman, the opening fast bowler, did most of the damage, taking 3 for 17 from his 10 overs. The run-chase was not a formality though. India reduced Bangladesh to 52 for 6, thanks to three wickets from Siddhanth Trivedi, before Ali Arman, Bangladesh's No. 8, saw his side home with an unbeaten 12. However, the win was not enough to gain Bangladesh a place in the Super League.
