Pakistan's win overshadowed Wisden CricInfo staff - January 24, 2002
Close Pakistan 281 for 5 (Yousuf Youhana 112*) beat Bangladesh 209 for 8 (Tushar Imran 65) by 72 runs Pakistan won the second one-day international at Dhaka at a canter, and in doing so wrapped up the best-of-three series. But the match was overshadowed by crowd trouble which left Shoaib Akhtar in hospital and, for a time, threatened to cause the game to be abandoned. The match, which had already been delayed by floodlight failure, was slipping away from Bangladesh when Akhtar, who was fielding at fine leg, appeared to be struck by a brick. Clearly groggy, he was led from the field and the rest of the Pakistan team followed. It took 40 minutes for the authorities to convince the Pakistanis that it was safe for them to resume the match, but by then the game was almost insignificant. The Bangladesh Cricket Board will not have heard the last of the matter. In the match itself, it was the same old story for Bangladesh. After bowling well for the first 15 overs of the day, and batting with spirit for 35 overs, they lost momentum with the result already a foregone conclusion, and eventually finished up a hefty 72 runs adrift. Yousuf Youhana had earlier scored a domineering 112 off 108 balls to rescue Pakistan from another top-order wobble, but the star of the show for Bangladesh was the 18-year old Tushar Imran, who anchored their innings with a composed and handsome 65. Tushar, playing in just his third match, picked the gaps with aplomb, and had Bangladesh's bowlers not tired towards the end of their 50 overs, there might have been an upset on the cards. Pakistan, for their part, appeared to have learnt little from their scare at Chittagong on Tuesday, and in the face of some incisive seam bowling from Manjural Islam and Mohammad Sharif slumped to 48 for 4 in the 17th over. But such is their batting strength that runs were only a matter of time, and Youhana's partnership with Younis Khan turned the innings around. Toying with the bowlers like a pair of sadistic moggies, they added 145 runs for the fifth wicket at more than six an over. Younis Khan eventually fell for 73 in the 41st over, sweeping Enamul Haque greedily to midwicket (183 for 5), but Abdur Razzaq strode to the wicket to bludgeon a tiring attack for 49 in 35 balls, including 13 runs from the final over.
Teams Bangladesh 1 Javed Omar 2, Mehrab Hossain, 3 Al-Shahriar, 4 Tushar Imran, 5 Sanwar Hossain, 6 Khaled Mahmud, 7 Khaled Mashud (capt and wk), 8 Enamul Haque, 9 Mohammad Sharif, 10 Tareq Aziz, 11 Manjural Islam.
