Moin receives tour SOS
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 22, 2002
KARACHI (Reuters) Former Pakistan captain and wicketkeeper Moin Khan has been called up as emergency cover for Rashid Latif for the conclusion of the one-day international series against Bangladesh.
"We got a urgent message from the team management today that they need a reinforcement for Latif," Lieutenant General Tauqir Zia, head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), told Reuters.
Latif, who returned to the team in England last year after three years in the wilderness, suffered cramp while batting in the first one-day international against Bangladesh on Tuesday. "At this stage we don't know what Latif's injury is," said Zia. "But since the team management has asked for a reinforcement we are sending Moin tonight in case Latif is unable to take further part in the series."
After a rest day on Wednesday, Pakistan play back-to-back matches to conclude the one-day series. Pakistan won the first match by 49 runs. "Probably due to the shortage of time, they don't want to take risks with Latif's injury since he is the only wicketkeeper in the side," said Zia.
Moin, on the sidelines since the Pakistan tour to New Zealand early last year, said: "It is a pleasant surprise, since I was not expecting a call so suddenly."
