Indian women coast past England
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 21, 2002

Fourth ODI India Women 143 for 5 in 41.5 overs (Chopra 49*) beat England Women 142 all out in 47.5 overs (Thompson 58, David 4 for 15) by five wickets At the Middle Income Group Ground in Mumbai, England's batsmen again played like paupers rather than plutocrats as they came down to earth after the heady experience of not losing the one-off Test. A familiar pattern re-emerged as England were bowled out for 142 and India cruised past them to go 4-0 up in the five-match. How England would enjoy the luxury of making even the middle-income bracket.

Caroline Atkins and Arran Thompson, who broke the world record for an opening stand in the Test match at Lucknow, again made an impressive start. Their partnership of 89 gave England the chance to attack in the second half of their innings but instead they collapsed quicker than the Argentinian peso.

Atkins made 28 and Thompson an attacking 58, before England had an outbreak of running between the wickets that was inspired by the Marx brothers. Both openers were run out and 104 for 2 quickly became 141 all out. Tellingly, the third-highest scorer was extras, with 20. Neetu David took her revenge for hours of toil in the Test match with miserly figures of 4 for 15 in 9.5 overs.

India will have been confident of victory, having lost only eight wickets in the process of thrashing England in the first three ODIs. In an almost exact reversal of England's innings, India lost both openers early to the left-arm seam of Lucy Pearson. Yet the middle order showed no sign of nerves, with Anjum Chopra making an attacking 49* to see India to victory with a full eight overs to spare.

The alarming thing for England is that they improved considerably on their totals of 106, 71, and 78 in the first three one-day internationals - and still lost easily.
