Bangladesh briefly threaten Wisden CricInfo staff - January 21, 2002
Close Pakistan (202; Rashid Latif 78, Tareq Aziz 3-19) beat Bangladesh (153 for 7; Khaled Mashud 54*) by 49 runs Despite a fine display by their bowlers, a familiar top-order collapse condemned Bangladesh to another comprehensive defeat in the first one-day international against Pakistan at Chittagong. After back-to-back three-day wins in both Tests Pakistan could have been forgiven for assuming that a large score was a formality. But Bangladesh's bowlers made full use of a moist pitch, conditions which made Waqar Younis's decision to bat questionable, and at 88 for 5 in the 27th over Pakistan's thoughts must have turned to that defeat by Bangladesh in the 1999 World Cup. But Rashid Latif and Abdur Razzaq (24) restored order with a sixth-wicket stand of 80 and guided Pakistan past 200. Latif surpassed his previous one-day best of 66, with 78 off 86 balls, with nine fours. Needing four an over on a fairly lifeless track, a solid start by Bangladesh would have put even more pressure on Pakistan. But instead Shoaib Akhtar blew away the openers inside five overs, and then Bangladesh effectively ended their own hopes of an upset with two pointless run-outs which left them struggling at 54 for 5. A seventh-wicket partnership of 85 between Khaled Mashud and Enamul Haque at least enabled them to avoid complete humiliation. Mashud recorded his highest one-day score (54*), but never looked to up the tempo and was content to settle for batting practice. That the match had long since ceased to be a contest was highlighted by Inzamam-ul-Haq being entrusted with the final over. It turned out to be a shrewd decision by Waqar, as Inzamam managed a wicket maiden. The teams now move on to Dhaka for the second and third one-dayers, both floodlit affairs. Bangladesh may have had their best chance to spring a surprise - it's unlikely that Pakistan will take them quite so lightly next time.
Teams Bangladesh 1 Mehrab Hossain, 2 Al-Sahariar, 3 Javed Omar, 4 Tushar Imran, 5 Sanwar Hossain, 6 Khaled Mahmud, 7 Khaled Mashud (capt and wk), 8 Enamul Haque, 9 Mohammad Sharif, 10 Tareq Aziz, 11 Manjural Islam.
