VOID DO NOT USE Wisden CricInfo staff - January 21, 2002
Latest Wisden ODI table It's hard to believe, but if England beat India at Chennai, they will become the fifth-best limited-overs side in the world, according to the Wisden one-day table. England's current percentage score is 47.22, but victory would lift that to 48.65 – and ahead of India, whose score would drop from 48.10 to 47.50. New Zealand's run of victories in the VB Series, meanwhile, has lifted them into seventh place and ahead of West Indies. Their three wins in the competition so far - two of them over Australia - have jack-knifed their score to 41.82, just ahead of West Indies (41.27). But Australia remained well clear at the top of the table after beating their nearest rivals South Africa twice in three days. After the first four matches of the VB Series, South Africa had closed the gap on Australia to a mere 0.58 percentage points, and they would have gone top had they won both their matches last weekend. But they lost them both instead, and were then skittled for 106 by Australia at Sydney on Tuesday to widen the gap to a yawning 8 points. It gets worse for South Africa, because even if Australia lose their remaining three games and South Africa win theirs, and then go on to win two out of two in the final, Australia cannot be knocked off the top before the end of the series.
