England's fastest one-day hundred
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 18, 2002
Marcus Trescothick scored his century in 80 balls, England's fastest in one-day internationals. The previous record was held by David Gower, who took 82 balls against New Zealand at Adelaide in 1982-83. This is England's 337th one-day international.
The fastest hundreds in England's one-day history are:
Marcus Trescothick (80 balls) v India, Calcutta, 2001-02
David Gower (82 balls) v New Zealand, Adelaide, 1982-83
David Gower (85 balls) v New Zealand, Brisbane, 1982-83
Trescothick's is not the fastest hundred for England. Gilbert Jessop made a hundred in 76 balls against Australia in the fifth Test at The Oval in 1902.
Trescothick continued his bizarre run of centuries in English defeats. He has made four international hundreds, and England have lost every time: 122 in the first Test against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2000-01; 117 v Pakistan in the second Test at Old Trafford in 2001; 137 v Pakistan in the NatWest Series at Lord's in 2001; and 121 today.
When he reached 117, Trescothick became the 17th Englishman to reach 1000 one-day runs. He is playing in his 27th match.
Nick Knight was out first-ball for the first time in one-day internationals, and out for nought for the fourth time in 66 innings. It's not the first first-baller of his international career though: Knight was out in such circumstances in what may well be his last Test innings, against Pakistan at Old Trafford in 2001.
India made 281 for 8 from 50 overs, their highest total against England in one-dayers in India. The previous-highest was 267 for 6, at Gwalior in 1992-93. India fell one short of their highest total against England anywhere: 282 for 5 at Trent Bridge in 1990, although that score came from 53 overs. Today they made their runs from 50. This was the 17th match between the sides in India.
It was also India's highest score in one-dayers at Calcutta, surpassing the 274 for 6 they made against West Indies in 1994-95. This was India's 11th match at Calcutta.
James Foster's stumping of Ajit Agarkar was his fifth in six one-day appearances. By contrast Alec Stewart made 11 in 136 and Jack Russell six in 41. Foster currently has more stumpings (5) than catches (4).
Dinesh Mongia made 71, his highest score for India. His previous-best score was 37, against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2001. Mongia was playing in his fifth one-dayer.
England selected Ashley Giles and Jeremy Snape, the first time they had picked two frontline spinners in a one-dayer since Giles and Robert Croft played against Australia at Sydney in 1998-99 - 53 games ago.
Giles played only his 10th one-day international. This was England's 75th one-dayer since he made his debut against Australia, at Lord's in 1997.
The Yorkshire pair of Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard played together in an ODI for the first time. Hoggard's five one-dayers before this series were all in Zimbabwe in 2001, a tour that Gough missed.
