Women's Test: No surprises as India bat out draw
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 17, 2002

Close India Women 312 for 9 (Nooshin 110, Maben 49) drew with England Women 314 (Atkins 90, Thompson 85) The last day's play in Lucknow was one for the true enthusiast only as the one-off, four-day Test match between India and England meandered to a draw. The game finished much as it began, with a long, slow partnership, this one between India's Deepa Nooshin and Mamtha Maben.

Once it became clear that India were not going to declare behind, the game was effectively in rigor mortis. At one point England had India 168 for 4 but the rest of the day's play was reduced to batting practice for the Indians as Nooshin and Maben put on 133 for the fifth wicket.

Though 67 less than Caroline Atkins and Arran Thompson made together in England's first innings, it was still enough to beat the existing Indian fifth-wicket record, a stand of 67 between Shubhangi Kulkarni and Anjali Pendharker against Australia in 1984-85.

Nooshin was finally removed for 110, caught by Caroline Atkins off Helen Wardlaw, but by then she had already hammered the final nail into the coffin of a game that had died a long time before.
