Three-card trick
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 17, 2002
Australia have lost three one-dayers in a row for the first time since 1997-98. Then, they lost twice to New Zealand, at Napier and Auckland, and once to India, at Kochi. The last time the Aussies lost three in a row at home was earlier in the same winter, when they lost to South Africa twice and New Zealand in the triangular tournament.
For the first time since 1982-83, Australia have lost three matches in a row to New Zealand. Before the two matches in this VB series, they lost the sixth one-dayer at Auckland in 1999-2000.
Australia have had five run-outs in their last three matches. Before the start of the VB Series, it had taken them 13 matches to accumulate five run-outs.
Chris Harris made 42 not out, taking his run in this tournament to 107 runs for once out. He made 63 not out against Australia at Melbourne and 2 against South Africa at Hobart.
In his last 20 one-dayers against Australia, going back to his 130 in the 1996 World Cup quarter-final, Harris averages 78.13. His run of scores reads: 130, 9*, 62*, 8, 13*, 38, 45, 55, 26, 26*, 9, 25*, 59*, 15, 63* and 42*
Chris Cairns, playing in his 140th one-day international, was captaining New Zealand for the first time.
