England dust off the cobwebs
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 17, 2002

50 overs England 151-2 (Knight 49 ret, Vaughan 35 ret) beat Bengal Cricket Assn 150 all out (Gavaskar 27, Collingwood 3-18, Gough 2-11) by eight wickets England galloped to an easy victory in their only warm-up match before the one-day series begins on Saturday, and then batted on for the remaining 25 overs of their innings to gain some much-needed time in the middle.

Replying to an unthreatening total of 150, Nick Knight (49 off 47 balls) and Michael Vaughan (35 off 31 balls) broke the back of the run-chase, before retiring to allow Owais Shah to close the innings with a stylish 36. It was that sort of a match. Nasser Hussain, who had earlier arranged to give each of his 15 players a chance, used nine different bowlers and, for 18 overs, handed the wicketkeeping duties to Marcus Trescothick.

Trescothick, who once kept wicket for Somerset in a university match, proved to be an able understudy to James Foster, and even picked up a stumping off Ashley Giles.

Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick, who both missed the recent Test tour, quickly settled into a good rhythm with the new ball. Caddick did not take a wicket, but got sufficient movement off the pitch to press his claims for the vacant slot at Eden Gardens.

Bengal had some familiar names in their batting line-up. Subharadeep Ganguly, cousin of India's captain Sourav, opened the innings, and Rohan Gavaskar, son of Sunny, top-scored with 27. The only Test player in the side, Devang Gandhi, fell to Paul Collingwood for 5.

Collingwood claimed three wickets in five overs of controlled medium-pace, and Matthew Hoggard continued his good form with 1 for 9. Jeremy Snape, Andrew Flintoff and Michael Vaughan all picked up a wicket apiece.
