NZ end Aussies' home run Wisden CricInfo staff - January 11, 2002
New Zealand's shock victory at the MCG brought to an end Australia's run of 19 consecutive victories in the annual tri-nation tournament. It was New Zealand's third win in 22 one-day games there. Before today, they hadn't lost in the competition since Pakistan beat them by 45 runs at Brisbane in 1999-2000, a match in which Brett Lee made his debut.
This was also Australia's first one-day defeat at the MCG since South Africa beat them by six runs in 1997-98. In between they had won 10 matches on the ground.
Australia have now lost the first match of the tri-nation series in four of the last five years, but will take heart from the fact that on all the previous occasions they went on to win the tournament.
