A tasty trio Wisden CricInfo staff - January 10, 2002
As Australia, South Africa and New Zealand prepare to face one another in the VB Series, Lawrence Booth selects three memorably close contests between the sides
Australia v South Africa They're the two best one-day teams in the world, but Australia have a score to settle. The sides have met 45 times in pyjamas, and South Africa lead 22-21 - the only side in the world who can boast a winning record against the Aussies. But their most famous clash - and one of the most memorable games of cricket ever - finished as a tie. It was the World Cup semi-final in 1999, and South Africa needed nine runs off the final over to reach their first final. What happened next went down in history.
Match report
New Zealand v South Africa South Africa had already beaten New Zealand by one run in the fifth game of a triangular tournament that also involved Australia. That, though, had been a low-scoring thriller. This one was just as close, but with a bucketful more runs. After slumping to 124 for 6 in pursuit of South Africa's total of 300, New Zealand were dead and buried. But the lower order - and an unfortunately placed boundary rope - set up one of the tensest finishes of all time.
Match report
Australia v New Zealand New Zealand's most famous one-day win over Australia came at Cardiff during the 1999 World Cup, but the most nerve-jangling win had taken place over 18 years earlier. In desperate need of a victory that would keep them ahead of India in the race for the right to meet Australia in the final, New Zealand kept their nerve - just - as Doug Walters set about the task of taking eight off Martin Snedden's final over.
