Nemesis of the new boys
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 9, 2002

  • Danesh Kaneria took Test-best figures of 7 for 77 in Bangladesh's second innings. These are also the best figures for Pakistan against Bangladesh, beating the 6 for 42 he took against them at Multan in August. In two Tests against Bangladesh, Kaneria has now taken 21 wickets at an average of 9.76. Kaneria was playing in his fourth Test match.

  • This was Bangladesh's third successive innings defeat, and their sixth in ten Tests overall. They have failed to reach 200 in their last five Test innings and haven't bowled the opposition out for three matches.

  • In their first Test for four months, Pakistan achieved their third successive victory, after previously beating Bangladesh at Multan in August and England at Old Trafford in May.

Abdur Razzaq made 134, his third Test century in his last six games and his highest Test score. Razzaq's previous-best was 110 not out, in his only other innings against Bangladesh, at Multan in 2001-02. He also made 100 not out against England at Faisalabad in 2000-01. Razzaq was playing in his 16th Test.

  • Rashid Latif's 94 was his fifth Test fifty and also a Test-best. His previous-highest score was 71, made against England in the second Test at Old Trafford in 2001. He was playing in his 26th Test.

  • Waqar Younis took 6 for 55 in the first innings, his 22nd five-for in Tests but his first since 1997-98, when he took 5 for 106 against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, and only his third since 1994-95. Between 1990-91 and 1994-95 Waqar took 19 five-fors in 25 Tests, after taking none in his first six matches; since then he has managed three in 44 Tests. Waqar was playing in his 75th match.

  • Waqar has not taken a Test five-for in Pakistan since he took 5 for 100 against Zimbabwe at Lahore on December 20, 1993. Having taken 11 five-fors in his first 14 Tests in Pakistan, he has since taken none in 17.

  • Habibul Bashar made 54, his eighth Test fifty in 19 innings. He also made 108 in the second Test against Zimbabwe at Chittagong. Bashar was playing in his 10th Test.

  • Shadab Kabir made 55, his first Test fifty. He is playing in his fourth Test but his first since 1996-97: he played twice against England in 1996, at Lord's and Headingley, and once against Zimbabwe at Sheikhupura the following winter.
