Murali on top of the world Wisden CricInfo staff - January 7, 2002
Muttiah Muralitharan has gone top of the PricewaterhouseCoopers Test Ratings for the first time after Sri Lanka's demolition of Zimbabwe in the second Test at Kandy. Murali, who took 13 wickets in the match including 9 for 51 in the first innings, has a rating of 909, one of the highest ever by a bowler - though only just enough to pip Glenn McGrath and Shaun Pollock, who are both over 900 and far ahead of any other bowlers. Murali also tops the one-day ratings. The leading run-scorer of 2001, Matthew Hayden, has moved up to fourth in the batting table following his century at Sydney, overtaking his team-mates Steve Waugh (6th), Justin Langer (9th) and Damien Martyn (10th). But Jacques Kallis slips from fourth to eighth because of his relatively disappointing series in Australia and Andy Flower, who was rated No 1 in the autumn, drops to third after scoring just 71 runs in four innings in Sri Lanka. Adam Gilchrist's rating of 782 would usually be enough to secure a place in the top ten, but such is the depth of batting around the world that he can only manage 11th position. The PwC Ratings
