England Under-19s edge a thriller
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 4, 2002

England Under-19s 248 for 7 (Hogg 83*, Muchall 44, Kadeer Ali 31) beat South Australia Under-19s 247 for 8 (Hogg 3-49) by 1 run England's Under-19s squeezed past South Australia Under-19s by one run at Adelaide in their first warm-up game ahead of the World Cup in New Zealand.

With Lancashire's Kyle Hogg making an unbeaten 83, England managed a respectable 248 for 7 from their 50 overs, but looked set for defeat when South Australia breezed to 230 for 3 in the 47th over.

But after a dramatic collapse in which five wickets went down, South Australia were left needing three runs off the last two balls to win, but managed only one and ended on 247 for 8. Hogg, who bowls right-arm fast-medium but bats left-handed, completed a fine individual performance with 3 for 49 off 10 overs, while Nottinghamshire's Paul McMahon strangled the SA innings with 1 for 25 off his 10.

England's next warm-up match is on Tuesday against Australia Under-19s, and they will play one more match after that before leaving Adelaide for Christchurch a week on Sunday.
