Sharjah refuse to accommodate Pakistan Wisden CricInfo staff - January 3, 2002
The organisers of the Sharjah one-day competition in April have refused to reschedule the tournament despite a plea from Pakistan to do so. "We requested the Sharjah organisers to reschedule the tournament from April to late March which could have allowed us to rearrange our cancelled home series against New Zealand, but they refused," Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Lieutenant General Tauqir Zia said. The PCB made its appeal as the existing dates clash with those proposed for the New Zealand tour which was originally due to have taken place last November. The cash-strapped PCB is desperate to host a home series, and the possible cancellation of next month's tour by West Indies has only added to its worries. "We face a situation where we could go without international cricket at home for the next nine months," said Zia. "There is now little possibility of New Zealand coming in April-May." The Sharjah tournament, which takes place between April 9 and 19, involves New Zealand, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The organisers are hoping that South Africa might also take part. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
