Let's raise the quota, says Sonn
Wisden CricInfo staff - January 3, 2002

Percy Sonn, the president of the South African cricket board (UCBSA), has said that he wants to raise the quota of black and coloured players in the national side from one to two. On Wednesday Sonn intervened in the selection of the South African side for the third Test at Sydney, vetoing the side picked by the selectors and forcing them to include a coloured player, Justin Ontong, instead of the white Jacques Rudolph.

"I did intervene on a matter of policy and that right is invested in me as president," Sonn said.

Speaking to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, Sonn said that he thought it was time to increase the quota. "The national cricket team needs to be more like South African society, rather than white. South African cricket is not isolated from South African society and life.

"South African society has been a broken society and we need to make a contribution towards a better society."
