Central Districts take out National Under-17 title 22 January 2002
Central Districts won this summer's national Under-17 tournament at Napier today when all last round games only produced first innings points. Central Districts headed off Wellington by two points with another six points back to Auckland, Northern Districts and Canterbury. Scores from the last day's play were: Central Districts 165 (H Beaumont 40, M Sim 35, D O'Sullivan 26; C Smith 4-21, M Rutherford 3-44) and 102/2 (H Beaumont 53 not out; M Rutherford 1-22) beat Otago 163 (S Simpson 30, H King 27, T McClean 26, M Rutherford 25 not out; N De Auvergne 3-36, D McDonald 3-38, D Bolstad 3-53) on the first innings. Canterbury 341/8 (T Astle 131 not out, R Hurring 59, L O'Sullivan 55; S McKay 2-67) beat Auckland 270 (D de Boorder 52 not out, A Bullick 48, S McKay 48; B Findlay 4-26, W Smart 3-47) on the first innings. Northern Districts 198 (B Hurrell 60, T Davis 42, B Wilson 30; M Houghton 3-19, L Chrisp 2-18) and 213/9 dec (B Wilson 79, K Read 58; K Forde 2-15, A Corliss 2-31) lost to Wellington 210/7 dec (M Martin 60, J Newdick 37, M Houghton 35; R Dunning 3-19) on the first innings. Final points: Central Districts 15 points, Wellington 13, Auckland 6, Northern Districts 6, Canterbury 6, Otago 2.
