Australia set the pace in Under-19 World Cup
Lynn McConnell - 20 January 2002

Australia Under-19 fully tested the workings of the Carisbrook scoreboard in their 430-run win in their opening game of the ICC Under-19 World Cup against Kenya today.

The Australians amassed 480/6 in their 50 overs as the tournament favourites demonstrated the depth of their ability from the very outset. They blasted 21 sixes during the innings.

Craig Simmons, the opening batsman scored 155 off only 115 balls and hit 12 fours and 11 sixes - or 114 of the runs in his innings.

Shaun Marsh, striking out a name for himself and moving out of the shadow of father and former Test player and coach Geoff Marsh, scored 125 off 81 balls, including 12 fours and four sixes.

As if the mauling by bat was not enough for the Kenyans they were dismissed for 50 with only Alfred Sorongo with his 18 runs got into double figures.

It was a harsh lesson for the Kenyans who were dismissed in only 21 overs as Aaron Bird took three for 10 off five overs while Robert Cassell took three for seven off six overs.

Kenya's next game is on Tuesday against Scotland while Australia play the West Indies on Wednesday. The West Indies have their first game against Scotland tomorrow.
