Selections too close to call in the All Time Indian XI - in association with BT Talk and Surf Together
Andrew Hall - 2 January 2002
With just over a week left, voting is hotting up in the All Time Indian XI, sponsored by BT Talk and Surf Together. With a number of places in the batting order too close to call, your vote can still make a big difference, so visit http://btindian11.cricinfo.com today and have your say! But hurry, voting closes on 11th January.
Today we highlight some of the key battles for a place in the side as the All Time Indian XI takes shape.
The Openers
Perhaps predictably, Sunil Gavaskar receives almost unanimous support for an opening slot in the All Time Indian XI. However, his opening partner is too close to call. A tight three-way battle is being fought between Kris Srikkanth, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Ravi Shastri, and a few extra votes for each player in the final week of polling could tip the balance one way or the other.
The Batsmen
It's that man again – Sachin Tendulkar is sweeping all before him in the All Time Indian XI. The Little Master has an almost unassailable lead – the only doubt being whether he will appear at 3 or 4 in the XI. The other two positions are more closely contested, with Dilip Vengsarkar, Mohammad Azharuddin and Rahul Dravid (currently favourite to carry the drinks) the current leaders.
The All-Rounder
With Kapil Dev in the reckoning, it is very difficult to see anyone else competing for this pivotal slot in the All Time Indian XI. Only Ravi Shastri of the competitors even merits a mention at this point. However, late votes can always have an influence.
The Wicket-Keeper
A battle between old and new in perhaps the closest of the categories. Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer are currently too close to call in the glovemen.
The Bowlers
Bishan Bedi, BS Chandrasekhar, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath are all performing strongly, with CricInfo writer EAS Prasanna among the other bowlers challenging for a place in the attack.
