Sweeping success
Wisden CricInfo staff - February 28, 2002

By Dileep Premachandran On a pitch that holds understandably fond memories for him, Anil Kumble was given some hammer by Andy Flower. While Zimbabwe's best batsman was held on a leash by Harbhajan Singh's offspin, he was in a comfort zone against Kumble's assortment of googlies, top-spinners and legbreaks.

The figures make for very interesting reading. Flower faced 23 deliveries apiece from the two spinners, eking out a meagre six runs off Harbhajan while plundering Kumble to the tune of 36 runs. Kumble pitched outside off stump 18 times and was taken for 32 runs. Remarkably, 20 of those came from Flower playing the sweep shot to leg. The confidence with which Zimbabwe's batsmen went for the sweep also said much about the slow nature of the pitch.

Dion Ebrahim outswept Flower, but was nowhere near as effective. He played the shot 17 times for 19 runs. Flower was far more productive, eight horizontal-bat swishes fetching him 20 runs.

Zimbabwe scored over 25% of their runs behind square on the on side, 47 runs coming square of the wicket and 23 behind it.
