Faoud Bacchus
Wisden CricInfo staff - February 26, 2002
Wisden overview A smallish, elegant, Beatle-haired right-hander from Guyana, and a jack-in-the-box fielder, Faoud Bacchus played 19 Tests for West Indies - all at different grounds - without ever quite establishing himself. His one major innings at Test level was a patient 250 against India at Kanpur in 1978-79. It lasted 512 minutes, contained 33 fours, and it saved West Indies' bacon after India had run up 644 for 7 before declaring. But that was Bacchus's only Test hundred, and that 1978-79 series also contained two of his three half-centuries. Eventually lack of runs took their toll, and Larry Gomes replaced him as the unflashy middle-order accumulator West Indies needed. Spotting the writing on the wall, Bacchus joined the West Indian rebel tour of South Africa in 1983-84, where he was one of the batting stars with 664 runs in 12 matches. He also played domestic cricket there for Western Province and Border. Later Bacchus moved to Canada - he hit 251 not out in a club match in Ajax, Ontario in 1987 - and then to America, for whom he played in the ICC Trophies of 1997 and 2001. Steven Lynch
