An Astle avalanche
Wisden CricInfo staff - February 26, 2002

  • In his 150th one-day international, Nathan Astle became the first New Zealander, and the 32nd person in all, to make 5000 ODI runs.
  • Astle's 122 was his highest score, and the highest score in one-dayers at Dunedin. His previous-best was 120, made against Zimbabwe at Auckland in 1995-96, and also against India at Rajkot in 1999-2000. The highest score at Dunedin before today was 119, by Viv Richards in 1986-87 and by Astle against Pakistan in 2000-01.

  • It was also Astle's 12th one-day century - he has made three times as many ODI centuries as any other New Zealander: Crowe and Chris Cairns come next with four. And it was his second century at Dunedin, where only five one-day hundreds have been made: the others were by Richards, Jacques Kallis and Martin Crowe.

  • Astle and Craig McMillan added 100 for the fourth wicket, the first century partnership of the series.

  • Marcus Trescothick continued his poor batting form in matches where he has also kept wicket. He has now scored 64 runs in five matches, at an average of 12.80. His scores have been: 18, 0, 41, 0 and 5. In 32 matches as a specialist batsman, Trescothick has scored 1184 runs at 38.19.

  • Craig White scored 17 and took 2 for 30 - his best batting and bowling figures for 15 matches and almost two years. White scored 19 and took 3 for 35 against West Indies at Trent Bridge in 2000.

  • Steve Dunne was standing in his 100th ODI. He is the first umpire to reach this landmark. David Shepherd lies second with 97.

  • This was the 20th ODI to be played at Carisbrook in Dunedin. New Zealand had appeared in 18 of the previous 19, wining eight and losing nine, with one no-result. In the other match, in 1994-95, India beat Australia by five wickets.
