Wright slams India's fielding Wisden CricInfo staff - February 25, 2002
NAGPUR (AFP) "Unfortunately some of our best players are the worst fielders," said Wright. "That is the fact. I don't know how to change it." India routed Zimbabwe by an innings and 101 runs on the fifth and final morning to gain a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series. The second Test begins at Delhi on Thursday (Feb 28). "Certainly we need to be a lot fitter and robust, " Wright continued, "but it is difficult to teach people who have been around for 10 to 12 years, how to dive. You have to move sideways and have the ability to throw. "Our ground fielding and catching need to improve, especially with quite a few overseas tours round the corner," Wright said, adding that wicketkeeper Deep Dasgupta needed to tighten his performance. "He has a long way to go while keeping against the spinners even though he has done better against the new-ball bowlers," Wright said. "Keeping is a very, very important role, especially when you have a spin attack. Deep has worked very hard, but he has obviously looked better standing back." Dasgupta, however, retained his place for the second Test as India made no changes from the squad that won at Nagpur.
