Fleming tries to remain upbeat Wisden CricInfo staff - February 25, 2002
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming was trying to remain positive ahead of Tuesday's deciding one-day international against England in Dunedin, but a record of seven defeats in New Zealand's last nine ODIs left him sounding more desperate than convinced. "Our confidence has been dented but we still believe in ourselves," Fleming said. "We have been frustrated but we are confident we can still do the job. We have got a big responsibility to win the series and we're determined to do that." New Zealand won the first two matches of the best-of-five series, but England fought back to win the next two games, setting up the finale. "We were disappointed by the performances in Napier and Auckland but we play better when we are desperate and this is certainly a desperate situation," admitted Fleming. He added that much of the blame for the team's recent slump laid with the batsmen. "There is a fine line between being reckless and positive but we have spent far too long in the reckless zone," said Fleming. "What I'm asking for from the batters is consistency. "England bowled very well the other day and I've seen a couple of very impressive performances from Hoggard. He has been a good addition to their side. We will give them respect but also try and take the initiative."
