Harbhajan rips through Zimbabwe
Wisden CricInfo staff - February 25, 2002

Close Zimbabwe 182 all out (Gripper 60, Kumble 5-63, Harbhajan 4-46) and 287 lost to India 570-7 dec by an innings and 101 runs
scorecard

India required just 75 minutes this morning to wrap up the first Test, taking six wickets for 30 runs in 21.4 overs. The signs were ominous last evening, when chunks were coming off the pitch with alarming regularity. Today, the wicket was at its worst, with balls turning and bouncing disconcertingly. And with Anil Kumble bowling with deadly venom and Harbhajan Singh finally having some luck go his way, Zimbabwe didn't stand a chance.

Kumble got another five-for to go with his four wickets in the first innings – enough to win him the Man of the Match award - while Harbhajan got four wickets in 10.4 overs today, after going wicketless for 47 overs in the match.

The batsmen had an unenviable task this morning, but they didn't make their job any easier by prodding circumspectly from the crease. Only once did any batsman venture down the wicket, when Heath Streak lofted Harbhajan over mid-on for four. Trevor Gripper had stodged for almost five hours in making 60, but once he fell, caught by substitute fielder Virender Sehwag at short leg off Harbhajan (161 for 7), the end was near.

Harbhajan had needed a mere three balls to get among the wickets in the morning – night watchman Ray Price prodded forward to one that turned and jumped. The ball took the inside edge and ricocheted off the pad to Rahul Dravid at silly point. Price made just 4 (156 for 5).

Kumble got into the act too, trapping Grant Flower in front for 1 with one that pitched fractionally outside off stump and came in. Flower shouldered arms, the ball thudded into his front pad, and umpire Venkat's finger was up in a flash (159 for 6).

Harbhajan got rid of Gripper and then grabbed his third wicket in seven overs when Tatenda Taibu went for 1, giving Sehwag his second catch at short leg (167 for 8).

Kumble then got his fifth wicket of the innings. Coming round the wicket, he got one to turn and bounce disconcertingly. The ball kissed the shoulder of Streak's bat, and Sourav Ganguly at gully latched on. Streak was the fifth batsman to fall in single figures, making just 8 (181 for 9).

India wrapped it up just 15 minutes after the first drinks break, when Brighton Watambwa attempted an optimistic slog off Harbhajan, but only managed to sky the ball to Sachin Tendulkar at backward short leg for 0.

Zimbabwe will have to regroup quickly, for the second Test starts in two days time in Delhi.
