Parore takes a sabbatical Wisden CricInfo staff - February 21, 2002
New Zealand wicketkeeper Adam Parore has announced that he is to take an indefinite break from all forms of cricket. Parore was replaced by Chris Nevin for the current one-day series against England, and has told New Zealand Cricket that he needs time to refresh himself. He has not officially made himself unavailable for the forthcoming three-Test series, but in a statement issued by NZC, said he was unsure as to whether he wanted to take part. "Adam was disappointed not to be selected in the one-day side against England," said NZC chief executive Martin Snedden. "His non-selection has given him an opportunity to reflect on his position and he's decided he needs a complete break from cricket to rediscover his energy." Leanne McGoldrick, Parore's manager, said the decision was "not a knee-jerk reaction to not being selected to play the one-dayers against England … He was extremely disappointed, but it brought forward his desire for a rest." Parore is New Zealand's second most-capped one-day player with 179 appearances, but he has been struggling with the bat in the shorter game for a long time. Since January 1, 1999 he has made only one fifty in 77 matches, and averages just 17. By contrast, Nevin slashed 55 in his first match back. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
