England pass their best
Wisden CricInfo staff - February 20, 2002
England's 244 for 5 was their highest total in one-day internationals at Napier. They had played only two previous matches there, making 219 in defeat in 1987-88, and 237 for 8 in the tied match in 1996-97. No higher score has been overhauled by a side batting second at Napier: Australia made 245 for 5 to beat New Zealand's 243 for 9 in 1999-2000.
Stephen Fleming's half-century was his first in 10 matches against England. Although he had never failed to make double figures, his previous-highest score was 42, at Auckland in 1996-97. Before the match Fleming had already scored more one-day runs at Napier (503) than anyone else.
Graham Thorpe's 52 was his first half-century in 11 ODIs. Since making 62 not out in the first one-dayer against Sri Lanka at Dambulla in March 2001, Thorpe's scores have been 12, 0, 13, dnb, 8, 36*, 2, 6, 41 and 10.
Paul Collingwood returned his best bowling figures in ODIs, and more than doubled his career tally of one-day wickets (before this match he had 3 for 303, from 15 matches). His previous-best analysis was 1 for 31, against India at Kanpur and against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, both earlier this winter.
Marcus Trescothick's 41 was the highest one-day score by an England wicketkeeper not called Alec Stewart for almost eight years, since Steve Rhodes made 54 against South Africa at Old Trafford in 1994.
This was the 20th ODI at McLean Park. New Zealand had won 12 and lost five of the previous 19. There was also one no-result, and that tie against England in 1996-97.
