Marks out of ten Wisden CricInfo staff - February 16, 2002
It's a little-known fact that no England bowler has taken more one-day five-fors than Vic Marks, and one of his is the Wisden 100's best bowling performance in England-New Zealand one-day internationals. Marks gently twirled England to victory at Wellington in 1983-84 with 5 for 20, a haul that included the first five New Zealand batsmen. It's the only five-for by an England bowler in this fixture. New Zealand have had three, one of which - Lance Cairns's 5 for 28 in Scarborough's last international in 1978 - comes in second. As for the batting, it's no surprise that David Gower tops the bill, as his majestic 158 at Brisbane in 1982-83 is sixth in the full Wisden 100 list. In a match where nobody else passed 40, Gower smacked his runs off only 118 balls. The top New Zealand innings comes from Martin Crowe - 97 at The Oval in the opening match of the 1983 World Cup, a masterclass despite New Zealand's thumping 106-run defeat. There are a few unlikely lads in both lists, none more so than Phil Tufnell, who spins in at fourth in the bowling list with 4 for 22 at Christchurch in 1996-97. The surprise comes not from the performance, but the fact that he hasn't put his England pyjamas on since. © Wisden CricInfo Ltd |
