The five-year itch
Wisden CricInfo staff - February 11, 2002
England and New Zealand have met in 47 one-day internationals, with New Zealand winning 20 and England 23. But this will be the first meeting between the sides since 1996-97. In 1999, when New Zealand last toured England, there was no one-day series because of the World Cup. England's early exit prevented the sides from meeting at the Super Six stage.
In New Zealand, 24 one-dayers have been played between these sides. New Zealand have won 11 and England 10. The last time the sides met here, in 1996-97, the series was drawn 2-2, with one tie.
John Wright (930 at 31.00) and Allan Lamb (921 at 35.42) have scored the most runs in one-dayers between these sides, while Sir Richard Hadlee (34 at 23.53) and Ian Botham (28 at 22.29) have taken the most wickets.
David Gower made the highest score in England-New Zealand fixtures, 158 at Brisbane in 1982-83. Indeed Gower has three of the top 10 scores in these matches, only one of which - Mark Greatbatch's 111 at The Oval in 1990 - was made by a New Zealander. Gower (three), Lamb and Greatbatch (two apiece) are the only men to make more than one century.
The best bowling figures are 5 for 20, by Vic Marks at Wellington in 1983-84. Marks is the only Englishman to take a one-day five-for against New Zealand. Lance Cairns, Richard Hadlee and Chris Pringle have all done so for the Kiwis.
The top scorer among current players is Chris Harris, with 354 runs at 27.23. Harris is also the top current wicket-taker, with 16 at 32.81.
England have not won the toss and won a match since 1990-91, in which time they've lost the toss and won the match on six occasions.
In five one-dayers against New Zealand, Nasser Hussain averages only 18.67
In one-day matches between these sides, no team has chased more than 226 to win in New Zealand. That was England at Christchurch in 1996-97, though England did make 237 for 8 to tie a match at Napier in 1996-97.
Ten of the last 15 one-dayers in New Zealand have been won by the team batting second.
All three of England's victories in India came when they batted first. Before that, only three out of 19 victories - since the start of the 1999 World Cup - came in such circumstances.
Darren Gough, Graham Thorpe, Nasser Hussain, Andy Caddick, Nick Knight and Craig White are the only members of the England party to have played an ODI in New Zealand.
