Zimbabwe recall Alistair Campbell Wisden CricInfo staff - February 7, 2002
CAPE TOWN (Reuters) The team, which will play two Tests followed by five one-day internationals, will be led by Stuart Carlisle, with former captain Heath Streak as his deputy. Campbell was dropped from the Zimbabwean squad in October last year, and although his axing was officially put down to a lack of fitness and patchy form, he had earlier been accused of making racist comments in a British newspaper. Although Campbell later apologised, he is still under the threat of a suspended four-match ban should he step out of line again. "It was a blow to be dropped," Campbell told Reuters on Thursday. "I needed to score runs - that was what the selectors told me. They've stuck to their word and now I've been given another chance and I'm back in." Campbell has earned his recall after his class shone through this season while playing for the Zimbabwe Board XI in South Africa's domestic Bowl competition. Campbell, a left-hander, has scored 329 runs at an average of 109, including a century in both innings in the match against Gauteng B last month. He also scored an undefeated hundred and a fifty in the two one-day games he has played. The squad fly out to Mumbai on February 12 for a five-week tour that will begin with a match against the Board President's XI on February 15. Squad Stuart Carlisle (capt), Heath Streak (vice-captain), Alistair Campbell, Dion Ebrahim, Andrew Flower, Grant Flower, Travis Friend, Trevor Gripper, Mpumelelo Mbangwa, Raymond Price, Gavin Rennie, Tatenda Taibu, Brighton Watambwa, Craig Wishart.
