Trescothick steals the show

Series stats

The Man-of-the-Series award may have gone to the ubiquitous Sachin, but the end-of-series stats would beg to differ. Tendulkar did as Tendulkar does, accumulating runs at a frightening pace, but even he was outdone by Marcus Trescothick, who opened his account with a record-breaking century at Calcutta, and broke the bank with a series-levelling 95 at Mumbai. His 318 runs came from just 304 balls - a rate that reduced his opening partner Nick Knight to a humble (but valuable) plodder - and only Virender Sehwag of the front-line batsmen could keep up.

India's batsmen rattled along with high strike-rates and high averages, but a series top-score of 87 not out (and that by Tendulkar in a victory romp at Kanpur) is damning evidence of a job half-done. None of England's bowlers set the series alight, but they hung in there at crucial moments and each chipped in with at least one wicket. Michael Vaughan's ten-over spell at Mumbai (2 for 37) is a case in point.

Ashley Giles' figures are somewhat distorted by his five-wicket spell at Delhi, and the real star of England's attack was Andrew Flintoff. His up-and-at-'em action could have been cannon fodder for Ganguly and Tendulkar, but in fact only Harbhajan Singh emerged with a better economy-rate. A month ago, you'd have got long odds on Flintoff bowling that vital last over at Mumbai, but in a series where England's three victories came by the slender margins of 16 runs, two runs and five runs, no man was better qualified.
