When Azhar squared the series Wisden CricInfo staff - February 1, 2002
In the last of six instalments running throughout the India-England series, we delve into the Wisden Almanack archive to pick out a memorable one-day match between the sides. Here we retrace our steps to the last one-day-series decider in India, at Gwalior in 1992-93. On this occasion it was England who led 3-2.
Match 1: when Botham met Tendulkar
6th ODI, 1992-93 - Gwalior Graham Gooch's England tour of India in 1992-93 was one of the most ill-starred in recent history. Cut down to size by a combination of smog, spinners, prawns and poverty, they were trounced 3-0 in the Tests and subsequently humiliated in Sri Lanka. And yet, believe it or not, they had the better of India for the early weeks of the tour, and on arriving at Gwalior for the final two matches of the six-match one-day series, they led 3-1. Of course, this was only to be expected, as the side had famously been stacked with one-day specialists such as Fairbrother and Reeve, at the expense of men such as David Gower and Jack Russell. England lost the first of the Gwalior double-header, but had high hopes of securing the series after an unbeaten century from Graeme Hick had taken them to 265 for 4 in their allotted 48 overs. But Mohammad Azharuddin had other ideas.
