Bonus points message will be passed to captains Lynn McConnell - 9 February 2002
Bonus points and their place in One-Day Internationals will be looked at by the International Cricket Council after the incidents raised during last weekend's VB series matches in Perth. New Zealand and South Africa both used the bonus point to shut Australia out of the final of the series. ICC chief executive Malcolm Speed said in Christchurch today: "We will have a very hard look at it. "There are a couple of issues that concern me and one is whether we would use them for the World Cup. "We've used it on a trial basis here [the Under-19 World Cup] and it seems to have worked reasonably well. "But in a three-team competition it can have an undue influence on the result of a series," he said. Speed said he was not being critical of New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming. He said the opportunity had arisen for Fleming to take advantage of the rules and he had done so. But he said when a system was introduced it needed to be made clear to players that every match should see "two teams going flat out until the game is over. "That message needs to come through," he said. © CricInfo
